When I try to connect to my Windows Vista and Server 2008 boxes a window just open and closes instantly.

I can connect to these boxes using the inbuilt Windows RDP client in Windows Vista.

I can connect to XP and Server 2003 boxes without any trubble using Royal TS 1.5.1 running on my Windows Vista Ultimate x64 workstation.

When I lock in the logfile for Royal TS it shows this error message:

 Hi!

I can only guess here. According to the documentation the error code doesn't exist, but I think MS is a bit sloppy updating their docs. However, there is one error code which starts with the numbers 28:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa382170(VS.85).aspx

disconnectReasonEncryptionError
2822
0xB06

Encryption error.

So a wild guess would be it has something to do with encryption. And as we all know, is Vista and Windows 2008 much more secure than everything else

Do you have any default policies or terminal settings on those machines which may be responsible for such an error?

In my environments we use Windows 2008 and Vista using the default settings and we have no problems at all.

cheers

Stefan

I got it working by changing the Remote Desktop settings from:

"Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)"

to:

"Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)"

Of course! I totally forgot that. It's already routine for me when enabling terminal services on those machines I always select the "less secure" option.

I will take your case to extend the FAQs with this information.

Thanks.

I am running into this problem as well and I have tried the "less secure" option and still cannot connect.  Has anyone else found any additional information regarding this error?

Note:  I am running Vista x64 and tring to connect to Windows 2008 x64

Do you get the same error code? Can you take a look at the Royal TS log, the event logs on the client and server as well? I guess it's working with the shipped mstsc.exe, isn't it?

cheers

Yep, I am getting the 2825 error code.  Where would I find the Royal TS log file?  I don't see it in the program files\code4ward\Royal TS folder.

As for event logs, I do not see anything related to a RDP connection in either of them. Is there something specific I can get for you?

There is no log file for Royal TS, there's just the build-in logging. Judging from the error code it has something to do with encryption.

Please check the following on the server side:

Open the Terminal Services Configuration MMC (in the Administrative Tools->Terminal Services)

Open the properties for the RDP-Tcp connection.

In the general tab, ensure that Security Layer is set to Negotiage; Encryption Level is set to Client Compatible; the last checkbox Network Level Authentication is NOT checked.

Also for your redirection problem, go to the Client Settings tab and ensure that Windows Printer and Drive is not checked in the list.

cheers

Ahh, there is the cause :)  The box was checked.  It is working now.  Looks like that error is related to the security level of the connection encryption.

Question, will you be adding support for the network level authentication?

I wasn't able to take a closer look at NLA yet. But if the ActiveX control offers an easy way to implement it, it will be on board in one of the next releases.

cheers
