I got a lot of feedback from users with one popular, common problem: the need to share Royal TS configurations accross teams and workgroups. This poll should give us a picture if the majority of these users would be willing to spend money in a product to provide multi-user access to a central configuration through a webservice.
Here's a rough technology overview about this potential product:
-
Will be a Web Service or WCF Service (can easily published via SSL to give people access to that configuration on the road).
-
Will be database driven at the backend: SQL Express (free) or better will be supported.
-
Will provide role based security (control who will see/can use/edit what)
-
Not sure about that but we are already discussing it: Some sort of "Smart Client" functionality to work with a cached copy offline and sync up to the backend when online again.

Possible interest. Would this work with the files (and access) off-domain, perhaps in an FTP site? Although we use this primarily in the same domain, sometimes we RDP via VPN. It would also be nice to have the role based feature so one RTS file can be created, granting access to specific servers on an as-needed basis.
Thank you again for this product. It's now indispensible for me!

I am a fan of database backends and user rights and when this features are implemented i would roll it out in the whole department.
I also would buy/use it when the price structure is OK.

Our companie will be happy to have this solution if we can manage everything thanks to the Organisation Structure with the Acive Directory.

One way of doing it would be to have each server as an individual file (each could be encrypted with a master password), and have these files stored on a network share, with the Royal TS progema capable of opening these files from several localtions at th same time. One location for private connections, one location for shared connections - all showing within one Royal TS session.
It would be very easy to keep several isnatalltions in sync with each other by just syncing te files in the directory. I got this idea from using roboform which is brilliant for keeping website passwords, and using a sync program for different installtions i.e. desktop & laptop.

Hi.
I work for midsized IT company. We have about 11 M$ system admins. Even with this little number i already see the administrative overhead while shareing connection info. Most of us already use RoyalTS (because i pushed it :D), however, because of lack of central database, i currently look for other directions, like Remote Dekstops Manager. I really like the idea of using somekind of database, like express or mysql, making easy to access other admins connections while he is in vacation or away. At this moment, we relay on our ServiceDesk manager, but this always means one extra move.
I really hope that while considering users and groups, you choose to use active directory integration (while still keeping ability to use local groups for these folks who dont have AD), that, as looking from M$ admin perspective, would be serious benefit over RDM.
Central database over multiple files on share - In file, you dont have realtime changing capabilities with multiple users. Also, personalisations - im pretty sure, that different users should use different "saved users and passwords", while still should be able to use basic connection info and notes from database. The future seems nice, hopefully you can keep up the good work.
And dont hesitate to ask feedback from users, they are who will going to use this program :)

We have bought and implemented RoyalTS and are using it.
But only now we see the downside, the lack of sharing the royalts file.
It can be shared, but changes are easily overwritten by other users, who have opened the same RoyalTS file.
We are about to move away from RoyalTS because of this.
Any word on an update or multi-user version?
Regards,
Harold

Hi Harold,
first of all, thanks for supporting Royal TS - it's very much appreciated.
We are aware that in larger teams the current implementation has it's limitation and we know from other customers that they manage to use Royal TS across larger teams with organizational measures.
What I can tell you is, that we are currently working very hard to get the version 2.0 up and running and we also try to deliver this Royal Server version which will allow you to synchronize documents to a central server from multiple team members as soon as possible. Every now and then I will post some updates on our blog (http://www.code4ward.net/main/Blog.aspx) revealing new features, screenshots and progress reports.
cheers,
Stefan

I can see version 2.0 is almost ready, will it or will it not be multi user ?
Thanks.
Kind regards,
Harold

Hi Harold,
thanks for bringing that up again. We are a bit behind schedule right now but the good news is, that server sync will be on board of V2. So yes, 2.0 will be multi user with security and all and all. We even will have SQL Azure support!
cheers

Yes this feature would also be used in our company.
Great idea.

Hi Guys,
Is there any idea how log it is going to take to release V2.0
At the moment we are also looking @ VisionApps Remote Desktop 2011. I've been using it at my previous employer.

There's no specific date right now. We are still working hard for our first beta release. Hopefully within the next month or two...

Happy with all of what you want to achieve below but why go to the bother of building Databases and Web front ends when all the information you want and need is already in Active Directory. And it's replicated. Be great if it was integrated and could filter or show all views and then use the OUs to structure servers, view servers etc. You could even create standalone configerations using standalnone ADAM instances? And they can replicate too!
What would also be kind of useful would be alternate ways of connecting to servers. A lot of virtual machines are now becoming available and to be able to use the VMware remote MKS to make the connection or simliar would be great!
How about an SSH/Telnet tool too?

Hi grumbler6,
we actually have some tighter AD integration in mind. Something like smart folders pointing to some OU and picks up all computer objects from that OU (including optional sub OUs). We are also looking into VNC and other stuff (like SSH or telnet) but aside from licensing issues we are still looking/waiting for clean and stable components. What we've tested so far wasn't very promising...
cheers,
Stefan

Thanks for the feedback.
We currently do not plan to create a server side product. We will extend Royal TS to allow file based synchronization (using drop box or file shares) and later we maybe will support SQL based synchronization.

I love the idea of anything where I can share my TS info. I take the time to put alot of info in my files.
The only thing I would ask to keep in mind is some why that end users can register thier own usernames and passwords. Basicly a way to sync the file with everyone but omit Username and Passwords from it (and have thiers merge in).
Love the product keep on rocking!
